The police actually had to get laws changed to be able to legally deny overly intelligent applicants. They say highly intelligent cops would get bored with the job and quit quickly after undergoing expensive training. But it's possible they just want dumb people who will follow orders without thinking and keep their mouths shut.

Almost as if blowing up a large quantity of dynamite on-site is an obviously stupid idea. I bet you that instead of detonating each of those devices one-by-one in the box, they were all piled up at once. How do I know? Well, I've set off Black Cats both singly and in large groups. Try to guess which of the two has a larger kaBOOM? The LAPD and the NYPD are globally recognized as being not just flawed organizations, but corrupt and incompetent from the ground up, their statement of "eMpLoYiNg tHe BeST bOmB TeChNiCiaaNs iN tHe woRLD!!111" very much notwithstanding their statement to the contrary.

When I was a kid I helped my step dad out with setting up some fireworks shows, he had a business in it. We would open the boxes with a boxcutter with the absolute barest amount of blade exposed. Literally just enough to peirce the tape and not a millimeter more. This was to reduce the risk of the 1 in a million chance that the blade could catch on some loose explosive and spark, or create a static charge. You would have about the same odds of that happening as winning the lottery, but we still took those precautions. Just in case. I cannot describe the bewildering realisation that at the age of 13 that I was more careful with explosives than "tHe BeSt BoMb TeChS iN tHe WoRlD"
